What you'll learn

Highlight #1

An introduction to the H200 Wireless for use as a therapeutic treatment tool and neuroprosthetic, covering appropriate patient populations, key indications and contraindications, and practical clinical application through patient case examples to support effective integration into neurorehabilitation practice.

Highlight #2

An overview of the fundamentals of FES physiology, including how electrical stimulation evokes muscle contractions, adjusting stimulation parameters to optimize therapeutic response and patient comfort, and a review of the evidence supporting the clinical use of FES..

Highlight #3

A review of system components, proper orthosis fitting, and guidance on programming and selecting the most appropriate therapy protocols for patients with varying clinical presentations and impairments of the wrist/hand.

Course Learning Objectives

1. Explain the physiological foundations and principles of functional electrical stimulation (FES), including indications, contraindications, and rationale for use in neuromodulation and neuro prosthetic applications targeting functional hand movements such as triggered grasp and release. 2. Evaluate current evidence supporting the integration of FES with conventional upper extremity rehabilitation to improve clinical outcomes, including reduction of spasticity, increased range of motion, prevention of disuse atrophy, and preservation of musculoskeletal integrity. 3. Demonstrate understanding of patient evaluation and key setup considerations for clinical implementation of the H200 FES Integrated Orthosis, including orthotic fitting, electrode placement, and stimulation parameter configuration. 4. Assess patient tolerance to FES, identify expected functional outcomes, and monitor progress over time using appropriate clinical measures and documentation practices.

Instructor

Wendy Warfield, MHA, OTR/L, is the Sr. Manager of Education at Bioness Medical and brings over two decades of experience as an Occupational Therapist to her role. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Elizabethtown College and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Maryland. Wendy has treated a broad range of adult and pediatric patients across inpatient and outpatient settings, with a strong focus on neurological rehabilitation. Her work at the Kennedy Krieger Institute: International Center for Spinal Cord Injury helped shape her expertise in Activity-Based Therapy (ABT) approaches and advanced clinical applications of functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices. For over 15 years, Wendy has delivered courses on integrating advanced neurorehabilitation technologies into clinical practice, with an emphasis on FES therapies, both nationally and internationally. She is committed to providing evidence-based education that supports improved patient outcomes.
